We had such a wonderful day at Christine’s studio in Richmond last month! What a beautiful space and filled with the amazing works of her late partner, Richard Lee, along with Christine’s. We Oooo’d and Ahhhh’d over all of it…and the view and the light and the…everything! Lunch was fabulous of course…we have so many great cooks in our midst! And we even had 2 visitors stop by. I forgot my camera but Crystal took a bazillion photos so maybe we can get some posted here. Anybody else have some photos…please let Nina know.

Our 3rd Saturday in February just happens to coincide with Nina’s shearing! wow! You can’t get much more fibery than that in one day! For a “schedule” of happenings and directions, see below.

UPCOMING EVENTS…

March 7th — FFF** @ DRA – regular 1st Wedneday meeting — usually beginning about 5:30PM

March 10th – starting around 9:30AM – Pam’s shearing, Hatchtown Farm, Bristol – Emily, our wonderful shearer, will be making 20 sheep naked…lots of opportunities for participating and learning about fleece management, handling and husbandry. Goodies & coffee in the AM. We’ll enjoy a late lunch/early supper potluck when all is done…probably around 3:30PM. More details to follow…watch www.hatchtown.com or here for more news.

March 17 – Diane has invited us to come to her studio on Westport Island…details to follow. Watch for Diane’s email or check in here for more info closer to the date.

**FFF = fiber fun & food or any order of those words

***********************************

Nina’s Info:

I hope that you all are looking forward to our coming Saturday! Our shearing begins at 9:30 or 10 am and we have 7 ewes to de-frock. It shouldn’t take more than a few hours at most, so hopefully we will be ready for lunch around 12:30 or so. If you want to join us for shearing you are all more than welcome, but if you want to just join us for lunch and spinning, that’s great too!

I am planning on having some pulled pork and bread and goat cheese for us. If I have the chance I will do some Italian Mac and cheese as well. Pam has said that she will do some cole slaw, so the rest of the menu is up for grabs. If you have the inclination to come for the shearing, make sure that you wear good boots, YakTrax or Grippers being a very good addition. The driveway that turns in to the animal paddocks is still a sheet of ice, as well as the area behind the house (new stairs and deck are almost finished, but not functional yet!).

I look forward to seeing you all! Can’t wait. Nina

From Damariscotta and South:

Take Route 129/130 South out of Damariscotta at the light in the middle of town (right turn).

Routes 129/130, also called the Bristol Road. Stay on this for a few miles and after the speed limit signs go to 50 mph on the Bristol Road, you will be approaching a fork in the road. (Big white house on right (Scottish Lion Iron Works), Hanley’s market and gas on left). Bear left, following signs to Pemaquid Lighthouse, etc. This is route 130.

-Stay on 130; when you see the signs for 30 mph, you are entering Bristol Mills. Go 0.5 mi.

-Watch for Upper Round Pond Road on left; there will be the Bristol Diner on right (blue house); Bristol Town Hall stands between Upper Round Pond Road – the first one – and Lower Round Pond Road. There should be a large, blue sign pointing toward the Rock Schoolhouse where you turn onto Upper Round Pond Road.

Turn right onto a dirt road, Rial Herald Road. (At this juncture Route 32 curves off sharply to the left, just where Rial Herald Road meets at 32). Go 2 miles on Rial Herald Road and it turns into Rock Schoolhouse Road. (You will pass Springtide Farm at a very sharp curve to the left. Keep going!) #224 on the right is our driveway.

The Treadlers are breaking out and meeting a second time during the month. We have decided that we will meet on the third Saturday of each month at a different member’s home or studio.

To start with we are going to be meeting at Christine’s studio in Richmond this coming Saturday, January 21, in Richmond. The directions are below. Christine asks that we bring along our own drinking water or other beverage, and she has a large microwave there as well.

The studio is on the second floor of the Ames Mill at 307 Front Street in Richmond, Maine. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at Nina@ruitfarm.com or Christine at fiberarts@gwi.net. We plan on meeting around noon and all are encouraged to bring along a potluck dish or treat. Spinning, knitting and fun until we are done! Hope you can join us :*)

DIRECTIONS:
From Brunswick:
I-295 to Exit 43/Richmond. (Not sure of the exit number if you’re coming from the north, but the sign reads “Richmond.”) Turn right off exit onto Route 197-East. Travel 3.7 miles through the town of Richmond until the road hits a T-intersection at Route 24/Front Street. Turn right on Route 24-South and we are the first building on the left. Sign over door says “Southard” Mill, but the locals call it “The Ames Mill.” The Mill is owned by Richmond Contract Manufacturing Company and there may be a sign out for them.

From Wiscasset:
Take Route 27-North (Gardiner Road) 7.8 miles until you come to Route 127. You will have traveled down a very long hill and the lefthand turn you need (Route 127) is at the bottom of the hill, just after Ship’s Chow Restaurant on the left (and before Bridge Farm). Turn left onto Route 127-South/Route 197-West (Middle Road). Travel 2.1 miles and bear right at the fork following Route 197-West (Patterson Road). Travel 2.6 miles over a bridge crossing the Kennebec River continuing until the road T’s at Front Street. Turn left onto Front Street about 0.6 mile to the Ames Mill, located on the left just after a town waterfront park.

PARKING/ENTERING
Park on street in front or in the lot to left of the building. Enter through front door which will be locked. Look to left of door, up high, and see a red door bell (I’ll have it marked). Push it and give me a minute to come down the stairs. I’ll be looking for you. Call my cell phone if no one’s responding. We can ride the big freight elevator up with wheels, so no need to lug up stairs.
